Wes tells young progressives in Manhattan what's what

By Carol Kilyanek, A Wes Clark Democrat

Wes Clark appeared at the Taj Lounge in NYC last Wednesday for a “Road to the White House” event sponsored by young progressive group DL21C. I was fortunate enough to attend.

The house was packed. The wonderful Jon Soltz from VoteVets.org gave Wes a moving introduction. Wes spoke and took a number of questions and mingled with the crowd before and after he spoke. All in all a very nice night.

There are video clips floating around and I’m sure a full transcript will be available before too long but here are a few things I pulled from what he said that night.

On people in other countries having imagination, energy, good ideas, etc:
"We are living in a country that inhales oil and petrochemicals and exhales American jobs, technology and greenhouse gasses. We’re not gonna last that way.....We can’t be only a nation of consumers. My son even who’s a screenwriter in Hollywood and will always tell me, “Oh Dad, America’s greatest export is entertainment.” Listen, there are other competitors out there. There’s Bollywood and there’s a whole lot of other stuff. We’re not the only people in the world who have imagination and energy and good ideas and passion and commitment. We can’t believe that."

On what Bush has done to this country:
"We’ve got an arrogant President who took us into a war we didn’t have to fight. But, worse than that, he’s blinded us to who we are as Americans. He’s focused on tax cuts for the wealthiest. He’s encouraged the passage of laws and operated beyond the law, using scare tactics to frighten Americans into surrendering the very rights and freedoms that make us who we are as a people. Can you imagine that this is a country that actually condones torture? That would admit evidence gained by torture into a court of law, in which a President can ignore the law of the land as expressed by Congress by claiming exemption from the law in certain cases in a signing statement? That’s not the America I fought for in uniform. My country doesn’t torture!"

On America’s legitimacy:
"We must restore America’s legitimacy in the world.....not preemptive strike....(not) when America acts, we’re the only ones that are right, no one else counts, we don’t have to talk to anyone else....It starts with repealing the Military Commissions Act and the Detainee Treatment Act and replacing them. Get ‘em out of here. No torture, no indefinite confinement. It’s not America....."

On Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and the “disappeared”:
"We’ve got to get the facts out. Where did the ideas come from and what’s the chain of custody of those ideas, the chain of causation of those actions in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib and elsewhere, where were the secret prisons, what was done in our name during rendition and where are these people who’ve been disappeared from our custody from all around the world?"

On diplomacy:
"Diplomacy’s about creating a new vision in the region and we have to create that new vision working with people in the region starting with the Iraqis, the Saudis, the Iranians, the Kuwaitis, the Turks...all the people in that region. And including Israel. There has to be a new and better way for men and women and families to live in that part of the globe and prosper and meet their own dreams....."

On China:
"We’ll be knocking at their door in 15 years (China) beggin’ ‘em to sell us cell phones because theirs will be cheaper and better than what it’s economical to produce in the United States....China has a very ambitious program. It’s not anti-American. They just want their rightful place in the world as they see it."

On health care and a single payer system:
"We’ve got to take the burden of health care off of American business....We should take the CHIP program, we should take the Medicare program and move toward a single payer system that makes health care accessible to every American and affordable to every American."

Will the troop surge make a difference in Iraq?

"After three and a half years of failed predictions and dashed expectations about our military's performance in Iraq, President Bush owes the American people a detailed justification as to why a marginal increase in troops and more promises from Iraqi politicians will make any difference in the outcome in Iraq."

General Wes Clark at a press conference with Democratic Congressional leaders in Washington DC to urge the president to offer real change for Iraq; January 10. 2007

Professor Clark

by JMora on Clark Community Network

On Tuesday, November 21, 2006 I had the great opportunity to see General Wesley Clark in a somewhat unfamiliar role, as of recently anyway. On Tuesday Gen. Clark was Prof. Clark, where he lectured to about 300 students at UCLA in a lower division Global Issues course. This was a great opportunity for the Generation “Whatever” students to get introduced to the General and see him in a non-political environment.

Iowa, Hot Dog! - "This administration is driving us into a ditch."

"The country's safer when one party doesn't have control of the Supreme Court, the White House and the Congress."

Radio Iowa, 10/9/06

On Sunday afternoon, retired General Wesley Clark headlined a rally in Des Moines for Democrat Congressman Leonard Boswell. Clark, a rival of Kerry's in 2004, said as he travels the country campaigning for Democrats, he senses that Iraq still seems to be the top issue for voters. "But I think there's a strong undertow on the Republican Party from Mark Foley and from really the disintegration of...what they claimed was their moral superiority," Clark said during an interview with Radio Iowa. Foley is the Florida congressman who resigned after lurid "instant messages" he sent to former House pages were made public.

Clark said he believes there'll be a "surge" of Democrats going to the polls this November. "The country's safer when one party doesn't have control of the Supreme Court, the White House and the Congress. It just promotes the abuse of power especially when the party is the Republican Party which tends to stamp out dissent within its own ranks," Clark said.

Clark: "Global Warming is a National Security problem"

"You have to see it that way and treat it that way in order to have an impact on it."

Interesting viewpoint and one that should appeal to a broad audience. In this broadcast of the ClarkCast podcast, "Leadership & Global Warming," Wes Clark warns of melting glaciers, a sluggish Gulf Stream, powerful storms like Katrina every five years, and release of spontaneously combustible methane into the atmosphere, eating up oxygen and smothering life. Loss of productive agricultural terrain and water resources worldwide leading to global disorder and geopolitical chaos. If you don't think Global Warming is about national security, think again.

Good God, what a speech!!

What are our choices?

Will we choose to emphasize boastful rhetoric or constructive engagement abroad? Will we lash out in anger with military force, or will we pursue every reasonable avenue to avoid the terrible destruction of war? Will we “fight fire with fire,” relying on the means and techniques of our adversaries, or live and lead by the higher standard of the values we have professed? At home, will we persist in shortsighted partisanship, or will we follow a stronger vision to the deep reforms needed to secure our future? Will it be selfishness or shared sacrifice that is our rallying cry?

These are the choices before us.

Clark Calls for Congressional Investigation on Body Armor

The very disturbing report on January 7 in The New York Times about a secret Pentagon study showing that 80% of lethal chest wounds suffered by Marines could have been prevented if the troops wore proper body armor, brought a DNC press release today quoting General Clark and Lt. General Claudia Kennedy.

General Clark said:

“This study is but the latest example of the Administration’s appalling disregard for the welfare and safety of our troops.

President Bush's rhetoric doesn't match the actions of his Administration, and unnecessary combat fatalities are the result. This is a clear case where Congressional investigation is warranted.

When were the needs for additional protection first expressed? Who knew what and when and why weren't necessary steps taken?

The American people deserve no less than full accountability and assurances that going forward our troops will not face unnecessary risks or danger caused by lack of resources, oversight or commitment from Washington."

“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism”

Thanks to Jai. From Larry Davidson's blog.

Worth a detour

Despite the general lack of excitement in Elmira, it does boast two great attractions: the Arnot Art Museum and the Chemung Valley History Museum.

-snip

Anyway, the museum has a well-done permanent exhibit on Mark Twain and the history of the Chemung Valley (southern tier of New York and northern tier of Pennsylvania). It also currently has three temporary exhibits, one on the Underground Railway (and the general history of black residents of the Elmira area), one on the history of Route 17 (which is currently being turned into I-86), and one on the history of patriotism in the Chemung Valley. This last one was surprisingly interesting, containing far more than the solutions to geometry problems represented by U.S. flags with various numbers of stars. In particular, it emphasized the roles of voting, citizen participation, and dissent. Above the whole exhibit was a quotation from General Wesley Clark: “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

A refreshing view in these days of the religious right and the current administration in Washington.

Democracy has to come naturally

Liberal Democracy, we've got to get it back

"We live in a liberal democracy. That's what we created in this country. It's in our constitution! We should be very clear on this... this country was founded on the principles of the Enlightenment. It was the idea that people could talk, have reasonable dialogue and discuss the issues. It wasn't founded on the idea that someone would get struck by a divine inspiration and know everything, right from wrong. People who founded this country had religion, they had strong beliefs, but they believed in reason, and dialogue, and civil discourse. We can't lose that in this country. We've got to get it back."

Democracy at risk

"I think we're at risk with our democracy. I think we're dealing with the most closed, imperialistic, nastiest administration in living memory. They even put Richard Nixon to shame." - Wesley Clark

Senator George McGovern

Wes Clark is the only man who can get our country back on track. He's got a jobs program to get our economy going ... a real tax reform to help our working and hard-pressed families ... and a health care plan to make health care affordable for all Americans and universal for all our children. He wants to fight for all Americans, from all walks of life. These are not just Democratic values. These are American values.
