Heading to Denver

I'm in Munich right now, but I can't tell you how ready I am to head to Denver and join my fellow Democrats.

The Democratic Party is ready to lead and address the many challenges ahead, and Barack Obama is the leader we need for our country and to help humanity meet today's global challenges.

We're a party loaded with talent. Like many of you, I've been thrilled by the speeches at the Democratic National Convention so far. Hillary Clinton was great last night. Her strength, her character, her call for unity. Her speech just proves once again that she is a great American and has many years of distinguished public service ahead of her.

And what an inspiration Ted Kennedy was, as was Nancy Pelosi, our Speaker of the House. Brian Schweitzer, the history-making Governor of Montana and Mark Warner, a business executive, distinguished former Governor and soon-to-be a remarkable U.S. Senator.

Tonight, I'm looking forward to catching the speeches of our honored former President Bill Clinton and our vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden. We are so fortunate that these two outstanding men are Democrats.

And then there's tomorrow. Our Party is so fortunate at this time in history to be nominating Barack Obama. After Michelle's incredibly warm and personal speech on Monday, any American can see the strength of character in their family. It's clear that when the Obamas become first family, they'll definitely bring change to America.

I can't wait to hear Senator Obama's words in person. He's warned us not to expect that he can duplicate the electricity from his memorable speech in 2004, but I think he's just being wise to play down expectations. He has proven to be a remarkable human being with incredible judgment, an outstanding sense of direction, and unmatched communication skills. I fully expect to be inspired, as I was in 2004.

I'm proud to be a Democrat, and I'm proud to ask you to pull together with me. It's time to help elect our candidates to every office. From mayors to governors, from state legislators to Congress. And especially to come together behind Barack Obama.

Barack is going to be the leader of a great team of Democrats in this election campaign. And he's going to become a great American President.

I believe he has the skills and resolve to strengthen America's security, rebuild America's economy, and restore Americans' faith in the future.

Our challenge is clear. We must win in November.

Sincerely,

Wes Clark

Time for Obama Team to Call General Wesley Clark and Request His Services

The Obama campaign needs to reverse course and reach out to General Wesley Clark who is the No. 1 most requested surrogate by Democratic Party fundraisers. He is a thoughtful, top tier, command experienced strategist. He once told me that we need to organize an "Urgent Action Climate Change Task Force."

How many generals are really, totally committed to climate change as a national security issue? The answer is not many -- but Wesley Clark is.

And first in September 2005 and then again in January 2006 at events that I helped organize, Wesley Clark laid out brilliantly the reasons why Iran must be engaged with a broad negotiation agenda without preconditions. He broke the ground for engaging Iran -- far before any other possible presidential contender did so.

We hear too much about a comment that Clark made about McCain on "Face the Nation" (which was technically correct) -- but we don't hear enough about the times he was right before just anyone on some tough calls -- particularly on Iran.

I'll never forget his speech at YearlyKos in Chicago 2007 when he called on President Bush to stop hiding between David Petraeus.

The Obama campaign has not offered a "role" -- as of yet -- to General Clark at the Democratic convention.

I have been told by Wesley Clark's office that the General would do anything he could do on behalf of the party and on behalf of Barack Obama if he could be of service. He has two board of directors meetings scheduled the week of the convention, but I know that he would adjust his schedule to be there. He wants to play a role -- and I think Dems need him now and will need Clark's service for many years ahead.

So, I very much hope that the Obama campaign will reach out to General Clark and offer him a role at the Convention -- a role that fits the stature and service of Wesley Clark.

I know Clark will be there if the Obama campaign engages him. . .because Clark is a dedicated team player, a strong supporter of Obama and the Dems, and someone who Dems should not take for granted.

-continues

“This discussion will highlight the important economic benefits of wind energy to regions around the world,” said GWEC Secretary General Steve Sawyer. “General Clark is a strong, globally recognized leader who understands the value of wind energy in terms of the environment and economic opportunities for communities around the world. We’re delighted he is a member of our expert panel.”

In addition to Clark, confirmed speakers include German Minister for Economics and Technology Michael Glos and
Schleswig-Holstein’s Minister-President Peter Harry Carstensen.

Schleswig-Holstein is the northern federal state where Husum is located. Additional panelists will represent specific regional authorities from China, Denmark, Germany, Spain and the United States.

Sawyer said the forum’s objectives are to raise political awareness among decision-makers and ensure they are informed on the state of wind energy technologies and the opportunities wind energy provides in terms of electricity production, job creation, economic growth and environmental impact reduction.

Something of an uproar on Steve Clemons' Washington Note. Ignore the factional fight among Clarkies in the comments, it's not worthy of General Clark, and ask yourself how the Democratic Party holds a theme night called "Securing America's Future" devoted to national security and the military without former NATO Supreme Commander Wesley Clark?

On the one hand, if this did happen as Clemons reports, would Clark's people at WesPac be this indiscrete? I would hope they would be more careful with the General's dignity than this. On the other hand, Steve Clemons does know these people and if he says they said it, I believe it.

Everything I know of General Clark since mid-2003 tells me he would never have wanted a public spectacle like this. But Clemons says he discussed the matter with WesPac's executive director and received confirmation, so I can't say it's some loose cannon, loose-lipped Clinton dead enders on Clark's staff.

General Clark supports Barack Obama for President. I support Barack Obama for President, as do almost all Clark supporters I know. As a staunch Obama supporter, even as General Clark backed Clinton, I've written to the Obama campaign to express my dissatisfaction with the situation, in case it turns out to have been true.

Wesley Clark, a Key Figure in Demonstrating Creative Leadership in Georgia

The Georgian and Russian incursions in Georgia require clear, unequivocal, creative and continuing responses from Barack Obama to assure voters that an Obama administration will be responsive and responsible when international crises erupt.

Fortunately, Senator Obama has General Wesley K. Clark, former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO and the military leader during the Kosovo conflict, as an unwavering supporter whose experience and leadership in eastern Europe is recognized by European leaders and by the American people. General Clark should be actively engaged in devising the detailed policy recommendations that the Obama campaign must make now and continue to make in the future as the combustible situation on the ground in Georgia evolves.

It is clear that the United States should not threaten the use of force in this conflict. Instead, as Senator Obama has suggested, independent observers should be dispatched to ascertain the conditions on the ground in Georgia and the dissident regions and to seek a resolution of the conflict.

General Clark knows that in a 21st century Europe made transnational in pursuit of trade and commerce, the 19th century solutions to which Russia is prone have no place. Russia should, and can, enter the mainstream of a Europe held together more by economics than national identities. It is to that goal that American policy should be directed and not to the bellicose attitudes and statements of the Bush administration and its supporters.

But somebody with the knowledge, experience and broad international influence has to move the idea of a resolution in Georgia to a reality.

That man is Wesley Clark.
Although 59 percent of federal contributions by military personnel has gone to Republicans this cycle, of money from the military to the presumed presidential nominees, 57 percent has gone to Obama.

-snip

Individuals in the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps have all leaned Republican this cycle, but the only branch in which that ideology has carried over to the presidential race is the Marine Corps, where McCain leads Obama by about $4,000. In each of the other branches -- including the Navy, in which McCain served when he was taken prisoner during the Vietnam War -- Obama leads by significant margins.

"That's shocking. The academic debate is between some who say that junior enlisted ranks lean slightly Republican and some who say it's about equal, but no one would point to six-to-one" in Democrats' favor, said Aaron Belkin, a professor of political science at the University of California who studies the military. "That represents a tremendous shift from 2000, when the military vote almost certainly was decisive in Florida and elsewhere, and leaned heavily towards the Republicans."

-snip

Army Specialist Jay Navas contributed $250 while deployed in Iraq, but it wasn't over the Internet. "It took some effort to get that check. I had my mom send me my checkbook and I walked to the post office in Camp Liberty in Baghdad with an envelope addressed to Barack Obama in Chicago, Illinois," he said. "He was right on Iraq long when others were jumping into the sea like lemmings, and that's hard to do. We're soldiers and we respect courage."

Only the Coast Guard prefers Democrats across the board, with 78 percent of employees' total federal contributions going to members of that party, and Obama beating McCain $7,795 to $250. Navas anecdotally confirmed that soldiers are often conservative but that many are making an exception in the presidential race. "Most of my friends are conservative Republicans and they say, 'I'm voting for Barack.' McCain does not have a lock on the military vote, that's for sure," he said. "We'll complete our duty -- I'm deploying next year -- because it's a commitment I made to the nation, not to a president. But we all know that Iraq was a big mistake."

Bob Tuke and Wes Clark to appear in Nashville together

It is my great honor and privilege to announce in this first week of the general election that General Wesley Clark is coming to Nashville to highlight a fundraiser for our campaign, which will be at the Acorn Restaurant off West End Avenue at 114 28th Avenue North beginning at 5:30PM on Thursday, Aug. 14. What a great kickoff!

General Clark and I have struck up a friendship over the past couple of years as he has visited Tennessee and as he has broadcast his important messages regarding our nation’s foreign policy over his WesPAC website. He already has helped me raise funds on his website, and we have shared our commitment to our troops and our veterans with the electorate.

For me, it is very gratifying to begin the general election campaign with my favorite General. He symbolizes the essential patriotism of constructive criticism of Bush’s Iraq and Afghanistan policies gone awry with the positive call for greater attention to be paid to our warriors and our veterans. General Clark and I share concerns for both, no doubt arising from our respective services in combat in Vietnam and his remarkable service in the Army thereafter, culminating in his commands as United States Southern Command, United States European Command, and Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO, during which he commanded Operation Allied Force in the Kosovo War.

General Clark and I believe our veterans deserve a fully funded GI Bill that rewards our war veterans with the opportunity to attend college and receive additional technical or professional training, something Lamar voted against. We also believe the United States Veterans Administration should be fully funded and fully staffed, something else Lamar has voted against repeatedly.

General Clark and many other retired Generals of the Army and Marines support my position that our military is being misused in Iraq and is stretched too thin in Afghanistan. We need to listen to these tested military leaders as we formulate our foreign and military policies.

Senator Alexander has paid lip service to the advice of our military leaders, but he has voted with President Bush time and again regardless of such advice. That is why I am running for the U.S. Senate. I will listen, and together we will Take the Hill!

General Wesley Clark Endorses Becky Greenwald For Congress

Waukee, IA – General Wesley Clark announced today he is endorsing Becky Greenwald for Congress. Greenwald is the Democratic candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.

In announcing his endorsement, Clark noted Greenwald’s experience caring for Vietnam War veterans and strong commitment to bringing the troops home from Iraq.

“I’m endorsing Becky for Congress because her experience with the American Red Cross assisting wounded veterans returning home from the Vietnam War has shaped her strong commitment to our nation’s veterans,” said General Wesley Clark.

Tom Latham has voted to cut billions from Veterans programs in order to fund tax cuts for the wealthy. (HCR 95, Vote #78, 3/20/03)

“George Bush and Tom Latham have for too long cut funding for our troops returning from Iraq, and we need Becky in Congress to be a voice for our soldiers,” said General Clark.

Becky’s first job out was of college with the American Red Cross helping military dependents and wounded Veterans returning from Vietnam adjust to a life with injury and the scars of war. She worked at Wilford Medical Center, the largest Air Force Hospital in the country. This experience has shaped her views and left her with an unyielding commitment to keeping the promises we have made to our troops.

Becky supports a phased withdrawal from Iraq and is committed to bringing our troops home in a swift and safe fashion. She supports a timeline for withdrawal that will maintain the safety and well-being of our troops.

“General Clark’s patriotism and service to our country is unmatched,” said Becky Greenwald. “I am honored to have his endorsement.”
I need your help to make sure I can stay on the campaign trail to help folks like Charlie Brown (CA-4), Eric Massa (NY-29), and Bob Tuke (TN-Sen).

The veterans, at Bally’s for their national convention, gave him a tepid reception, especially considering McCain’s life story. The Arizona senator was a Navy pilot shot down over Vietnam, tortured and held as a prisoner of war for 5 1/2 years.

Just one of 14 veterans interviewed by the Sun after his speech said he is a certain McCain voter, and the nonpartisan group’s legislative director expressed concerns about McCain’s proposed “Veterans’ Care Access Card.”

Joe Violanti, legislative director of the Disabled American Veterans, a nonpartisan organization, said the proposal would increase costs because private hospitals are more expensive. The increased cost could lead to further rationing of care, he said.

Duke Hendershot, a double amputee retired Marine who served in Vietnam, supported McCain’s run for president in 2000 but is undecided this year.

“John just isn’t the same as he used to be. He’s not his own man,” said Hendershot...

He said McCain’s embrace of Bush, whom Hendershot called a “draft-dodging coward,” is even more perplexing because of the rivalry between the two candidates during the 2000 campaign.

Hendershot also criticized McCain for taking swipes at Obama in his speech. “He should have been talking about veterans issues, not his opponent,” he said.

By contrast, he praised Obama for keeping his remarks tightly focused on veterans. The Democrat gave taped remarks via video.
