New England emergency communications conference

Clark is at Gilette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts today, speaking to first responders. Pretty pricey stuff. On a somehow related note, my good friend Jai asks: "Wonder how Warner feels about his company sending Wes around the country?"

First Responders Attend Communications Conference

Conference Has Latest In Emergency Communications Concepts

FOXBORO, Mass. -- First responders from all over Southern New England came to Gilette Stadium in Foxboro on Tuesday to learn the latest in emergency communications concepts.

The conference was held by Sprint.

"I think we've made real progress in preventing," Gen. Wesley Clark said. "I think we’ve got a lot to do yet in responding."

One of the concepts was a cell phone that would be tied directly into a dispatch center that would record an emergency or incident. The phone would limit the amount of confusion when responders were sent to deal with a crisis.

"There has to be teamwork and you cannot coordinate that teamwork without the communication. So it is absolutely critical to have it," Clark said.

A look at the back-to-back hurricanes that leveled much of Louisiana and Mississippi exposed dangerous deficiencies among emergency responders.

"But the first thing they talk about is the collapse of the communications structure," Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch said.

Clark said it would take a multibillion-dollar investment in communications to be properly prepared.
